How to save Snapchat videos on iPhone and Android
Downloading the file is the easy part. What confuses people is where the video ends up afterwards, because iPhone and Android handle browser downloads in completely different ways.
Here is what happens on each, and what to do when the file lands somewhere you did not expect.

Getting the link off your phone
This part is identical on both platforms. The Snapchat app gives you a short link that works as it is, with no cleaning up needed.
On iPhone
Safari does not put downloads into Photos. It puts them into the Files app, which catches almost everyone out the first time.
Tap Download and confirm
Safari asks whether you want to download the file. Confirm, and a small arrow appears near the address bar while it works.
Open Files, then Downloads
Your video is in the Downloads folder, usually under On My iPhone or iCloud Drive depending on your settings.
Move it into Photos
Tap the video, then the share icon, then Save Video. It now appears in your camera roll like any other clip.
If nothing seems to download at all, check Settings › Safari › Downloads. If it is set to a location that no longer exists, Safari silently fails rather than telling you.
On Android
Android is more direct. Chrome saves to the Downloads folder and the video usually shows up in your gallery on its own within a minute or two.
Tap Download
Chrome may ask for permission the first time. A notification appears when the file is done.
Check your gallery
Most gallery apps scan the Downloads folder automatically, so the video appears there without you doing anything.
If it does not appear, open Files
Find it under Downloads and move it into your Pictures or Movies folder. Some gallery apps only scan those.
When a file will not open
Almost every case of a downloaded video refusing to play comes down to one of two things.
- •The download was interrupted. A partial file has the right name and the wrong contents. Delete it and download again on a stable connection.
- •It is a photo with a video extension. Some tools guess the file type instead of checking it, and hand you an image named .mp4 that no player will touch. Renaming it to .jpg usually rescues the file.
Snapchat serves video as MP4 and photos as JPG, both of which open natively on every phone made in the last decade. If you have a file in some other format, it did not come from Snapchat.
A note on quality
The resolution you get is whatever the creator originally uploaded. Snapchat does not store one fixed size, so a Spotlight video shot on a recent phone comes down sharp while an older Story can be noticeably softer. No setting anywhere changes this, because the file is served exactly as it was stored.
Anything advertising an upgrade to 4K is either upscaling the video, which invents detail that was never recorded, or simply not telling the truth.
Common questions
Where do Snapchat downloads go on iPhone?
The Files app, in the Downloads folder. Safari never saves directly into Photos. Open the file, tap share, then Save Video to move it into your camera roll.
Why does my Android gallery not show the video?
Some gallery apps only scan Pictures and Movies rather than Downloads. Move the file into one of those folders and it appears.
Do I need to install an app?
No. Everything happens in your browser. Be wary of Snapchat downloader apps in general, since many ask for permissions far beyond what saving a video requires.
Can I download several snaps from one Highlight at once?
Each snap in a Highlight comes back as its own file with its own download button. There is no single archive, because Snapchat stores them as separate videos.
Does this use my mobile data?
Yes, the same as watching the video would. A long Highlight of ten clips uses roughly what watching those ten clips twice would use.
